Hand appliqué using Transfer Papel

Os enseño lo que ronda últimamente por mi mesa de costura. Ando liada con uno de los bloques del SAL de Scrap, quilt and stitch. Roxane todavía tiene disponible los patrones de este Mystery Quilt en su blog, por si estáis interesados en intentarlo, y está preparando un proyecto nuevo, ya os tendré al día cuando nos de más información.
I wanted to share with you what I am currently working on. This is another block of the Mistery Quilt organised by Roxane in Scrap, quilt and stitch. Para este proyecto estoy usando papel transfer. Es un papel transparente, parecido a la entretela, pero más fino. Tan fino que va a dejar que el rotulador deje la marca de tinta sobre la tela.
For this project I am using the transfer paper technique. It is a very transparent paper that will let the ink of your pen to go through the paper onto your fabric. It is very much like interfacing but very very thin.

En este papel calco el patrón que quiero llevar a la tela usando un lápiz de carbon normal, para no marcar mucho el papel y correr el riesgo de que se rompa pronto. Tened en cuenta que luego hay que repasar el contorno varias veces, primero a la tela base de mi bloque y luego a cada una de las telas que formarán las piezas independientes.
I copy my pattern from my printed copy to the transfer paper by using a normal black pencil. I don´t want to waste my washable ink pen on this first draft. We are going to need to go through those lines several times and I want my transfer paper to last and not to get broken before I´m finished. 

Una vez copiado el diseño al papel, se coloca sobre el derecho de la tela base y se calca usando esta vez un rotulador de tinta lavable. Esto nos ayudará a emplazar las distintas piezas con más precisión. El papel transfer luego nos va a servir para transferir cada una de las piezas de nuevo al derecho de la tela que elijamos.
Once the pattern is onto the transfer paper, I will use the washable ink pen to highlight the lines and copy the pattern onto the right side of my background fabric. The same technique will be used to transfer the different parts into the corresponding fabrics.

Cuando se hace un trabajo de aplicación hay que pensar un poco en tridimensional e intentar desmontar el dibujo en capas. Roxane proporciona instrucciones muy buenas sobre el orden de las piezas pero yo a veces soy floja para leerlas y voy improvisando sobre la marcha. Por ejemplo, me imagino el dibujo y pienso que antes de edificar la casa estaba el campo, que va a ser mi primera pieza. Luego los árboles, claro, pero como están ocultos por la casa voy a dejarlos para casi el final, con excepción de las hojas que tocan el tejado de la casa.
When I am doing an appliqué work I try to think in layers. I imagine my landscape and what came first into it. First the land, then the trees, then the house, the fence and so forth. This helps me to determine what pieces go first. Roxane gives detailed instructions with the patterns but this is basically the line of thought I use when reading an appliqué pattern.  

Mi segunda pieza serían las paredes de la casa. Aquí podría haber hecho una sola pieza de tela y luego haber marcado con bordado las líneas de separación de los leños, pero decidí complicarme un poco la vida. :o) La verdad es que te imaginas al leñador cortando los troncos y poniéndolos uno encima de otro y eso hice con mi tela. Fui cortando tiras de tela marrón y colocándolas unas encima de otras. Le da un aspecto un poco más irregular a la cabaña y a mí me gusta. Algunos de los bordes de la vivienda los he dejado sin coser para luego insertar por debajo la valla de madera, que va en un segundo plano.
For the walls of the house I could have simply used one piece of fabric and then highlight the logs with an embroidery stitch. However, I decided to build my cabin log by log. I cut long strips of the brown fabric and stitched them from the bottom up. I didn´t stitch some of the side logs in order to fit in the fence underneath.

Después el tejado que sí que es una sola pieza. Fijáos cómo hay una parte del tejado sin coser. Como va a quedar oculta con otra pieza, no hace falta coserla. Tuve que coser una hoja del árbol que se oculta detrás del tejado y también la chimenea que queda por detrás.
The roof is made of one piece. Note that I left one side loose, without sewing. This will be covered by a different fabric later on so there is no need to stitch that. I did have to sew however one of the tree leaves and the chimney underneath the roof.

Estos alfileres son especiales para aplicación y son muy cortitos, la verdad es que ayudan mucho. A veces coloco varias piezas a la vez y luego voy cosiendo. Aquí estaba intentando poner las jambas y el dintel de la puerta.
These are special pins for appliqué work. They are shorter than usual so they can be handy when piecing very narrow pieces. Sometimes I just shape and pin several pieces together before sewing them with a hidden stitch.

Poco a poco va tomando forma. Todavía me queda rematar una parte del borde del tejado, ventanas, valla, árboles y un poquito de bordado. Ya os enseñaré el bloque terminado.
Little by little the block is taking shape. I still have to finish the roof, windows, fencing, trees and add up a bit of embroidery. I will keep you updated on the progress.

Un consejo. Aseguráos de planchar las telas antes de usar vuestro rotulador de tinta lavable, después olvidáos de la plancha hasta que no esté el bloque terminado y lavada la tinta.

Just a tip. Iron your fabric before transferring the pieces with your washable ink pen. Then do not attempt to iron the block even if it looks as wrinkle as mine. Once you finish your block, wash it, get rid of the ink and then iron it to your heart´s content. Any queries, just shout. Regards.
